Aids and Adapatations
Sometimes your home becomes unsuitable for your needs because you have a physical handicap or disability. Problems can often be overcome by carrying out adaptations to the property. For example, baths can be replaced with showers, ramps can be provided at entrances for wheelchair users and grab rails can be installed in the bathroom or elsewhere in your home.
If you have problems with stairs, getting in and out of the bath, need wheelchair access, or have any other special needs, it may be possible to adapt your home to help you overcome these difficulties. Usually this work is carried out on the advice of an Occupational Therapist from Lincolnshire Country Council Social Services. The Occupational Therapist will usually refer your needs for adaptations to Boston Borough Council who deal with disabled facilities grants. They will, in turn, negotiate with Boston Mayflower as your landlord.
If you have any enquiries about adaptations for people with a disability please contact your Local Area Housing Team at Boston Mayflower who will be pleased to provide you with guidance and advice.
Do I have to pay for the work?
Disabled facilities grants can help with the cost of carrying out adaptations. If you or someone living in your home is disabled you may qualify for a disabled facilities grant towards the cost of providing adaptations and facilities to enable the disabled person to continue to live there. All grants are means tested and need a formal referral form and Occupational Therapist.
If you think that you may qualify for a disabled facilities grant you can get in touch with Lincolnshire County Council Social Services at County Hall, Boston PE21 6LX, tel: 01205 310010, or contact Boston Borough Council Private Sector Housing Team at The Municipal Buildings, West Street, Boston, PE21 8QR, tel: 01205 314200 and they will help to arrange a formal assessment. The maximum grant available per person is £25,000. If you do not qualify for a grant you will have to arrange to pay for the work yourself.
